Vague Magazine 2010 - Flush the Royal gush

Monday, 4 October 2010

"The Queen said of the Palace bombing that she was glad, because it meant that she would now be able to look the East End in the face..."

So gushes the reverent, plummy voiceover advertising the latest in the excellent "Spirit of 1940" series on the Yesterday Channel. "Was the war the making of the Royal Family?" It earnestly goes on to ask.

Actually, No. I submit that HRH was never in a position to "look the East End in the face", not then, and not at any other time before or since. A bit of damage to one wing of her London pad did not compare to the devastation sustained by the poor of the East End. Not when she had some 6 other palaces and stately homes to which she could retreat whilst cheery workmen carried out the necessary repairs to Buck House.

Will this nation every achieve any perspective whatsoever on the Hanoverians? Sadly, I doubt it...
